Sustainability Festival PromotesGreen Lifestyle with Family Fun
Volunteer-organized community service event
The Great Peninsula Future Festival, August 1-2, 2009, in historic Port Gamble, was conceived as a fun way to involve the whole community in thinking about sustainability and how our lifestyle choices affect the future health of our communities, our economy and our environment.

The festival grew out of a 2007 conference on sustainability, involving some 60 Kitsap community leaders. Sponsored by West Sound Conservation Council and led by Rep. Larry Seaquist (Gig Harbor), the brainstorming workshop involved area mayors, legislators, county commissioners and leaders from many Kitsap community organizations.

“Interest was so high, I decided we needed a way to keep the conversation going and involve the rest of the community,” said Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer. “I invited other Kitsap community leaders to join me in organizing an annual festival with sustainability as its theme. The response was amazing. Dozens of community leaders volunteered.”
“Our goal is to bring citizens together with community leaders, public officials, environmental educators and green entrepreneurs in a festival atmosphere,” explained Bauer. “Our vision was to get people to come for the fun and leave realizing we all need to do our part to create a sustainable future.”

Last year’s Great Peninsula Future Festival drew some 5,000 attendees and hosted 110 green exhibits. It featured such speakers as Congressman Jay Inslee, State Senator Phil Rockefeller, State Representative Larry Seaquist, Kathy Fletcher of People for Puget Sound and authorities on a variety of related topics, including alternative energy, sustainable gardening, buy local campaigns and sustainable business practices.

The biggest attraction, however, was the headline entertainment. This year’s festival will once again feature the popular New Old Time Chautauqua, a vaudeville troupe offering live music, magic shows, topical humor, acrobatics, jugglers and colorful parades. The two-day festival will also feature other live bands and entertainers.

The festival will host scores of green exhibits, hand-made crafts by local artists, delicious food, informative speakers and practical workshops on such topics as alternative energy, beekeeping, weaving, sustainable gardening,” buy local” opportunities and heritage trees. There will also be a trash art contest and science fair open to all ages. The festival will offer lots of fun stuff for kids, including FIN, a walk-in mobile salmon.

Port Gamble Sustainability Festival Involves Whole Community

Great Peninsula Future Festival
August 2-3, 2008, Port Gamble WA
Building a sustainable future—together.

NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Port Gamble Sustainability Festival Involves Whole Community
Dozens of community organizations are involved in organizing a sustainability festival in historic Port Gamble, August 2-3. The outdoor festival will mix headline entertainment, live music, local food, hand-made crafts and a farmers market with exhibits, speakers and workshops focused on the theme of sustainability.
“We want to bring community leaders, environmentalists, educators, green business leaders and citizens together in a festival atmosphere to talk about sustainability,” said Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer, who is spearheading the event planning. “We decided that learning how to live a greener lifestyle should be fun.”
“We want families to come for the fun and take away ideas they can use in their own neighborhoods and communities,” explained Bauer. “We’ll have lots of activities for kids, including clowns, magic, puppet shows, story tellers, jugglers, mask making, a walk-in mobile salmon and a trash art contest.”
The festival will feature dozens of entertainers on three stages, including such headline entertainers as the Flying Karamazov Brothers, jazz singing legend Alice Stuart, an internationally known clown, a magic show and many others.
How It All Started
The Great Peninsula Future Festival was inspired by a Kitsap community workshop last October led by Larry Seaquist (State Representative for the 26th District). Some 60 Kitsap community leaders gathered to brainstorm on strategies for achieving a sustainable Kitsap. The group included two mayors (Kim Abel, Darlene Kordonowy) two state legislators (Derek Kilmer, Larry Seaquist) and two Kitsap County commissioners (Steve Bauer, Josh Brown). The workshop was sponsored by West Sound Conservation Council, WSU-Kitsap Extension and Sustainable Bremerton.
Bauer was so impressed with the level of enthusiasm and interest in sustainability he wanted to find a way to build on the interest and involve the entire community. He talked about it with his sister, Sandra Bauer, who was one of the original organizers of the popular Oregon Country Fair.
By the end of the conversation, they had come up with the idea of organizing an annual sustainability festival. Dozens of Kitsap community leaders answered Steve’s invitation to form a festival planning council. Jon Rose of Olympic Property Group generously offered Port Gamble as the host site on a prime summer weekend, August 2-3.
The festival has since earned broad support among Kitsap business and community service organizations, as well as volunteer groups all across Kitsap County. Major sponsors include Kitsap County Commissioners Steve Bauer and Josh Brown; the Kitsap News Group family of newspapers, WSU-Kitsap Extension, Home Builders Association of Kitsap County, Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, Port Gamble (Olympic Property Group), Wet Apple Media (Kitsap Business Journal). Other sponsors include Puget Sound Energy, Port Madison Enterprises (Suquamish Tribal business unit), Town and Country Market, West Sound Utilities, Port of Bremerton Kitsap SEED, Kitsap County Solid Waste Division and Monty Mahan, candidate for SK County Commissioner.

Festival organizers include volunteers from Stillwaters Environmental Education Center, Kitsap Audubon Society, WSU-Kitsap Extension, Kitsap Community and Agricultural Alliance, Sustainable Bremerton, SCALLOPS (Sustainable Communities All Over Puget Sound), Washington State Farmers Market Association, Kitsap Conservation Voters, Poulsbo Farmers Market, Kitsap Citizens For Responsible Planning and New Old Time Chautauqua.

March Murder & Mayhem in Port Gamble

The Kingston Kiwanis is putting on an event in March called "March Murder & Mayhem in Port Gamble", based on a play, "The Square Dance of Death", by Mark Robyn. This event will be held on March 29th, from 2pm-6pm, in Port Gamble. This event operates like a life-sized Clue game, with all of the characters and suspects hiding out in various businesses throughout town. Stop at each business to interrogate the actors and try to solve the mystery. After careful detecting....decide who did dastardly deed, then, at 5:00PM, go to the Theater located upstairs in the Post Office Building. Meet there to submit the name of the person you believe to have committed the crime, and then enjoy food and wine while watching the short play to discover the true identity of the murderer. Those who correctly discover the id entity of the murderer will have their name entered into a drawing to win $100.00 worth of Port Gamble Bucks!

Begin this event by going to the Conference Room, located beneath the General Store in Port Gamble Turn in your ticket and receive a program which contains a brief outline of the story, a list of characters and where they are located in town, and a little history of the town itself. Participants will also pick up their food and wine tickets at this time.

Tickets for this event are $20.00, and can be purchased in all Port Gamble businesses and participating Kingston businesses. All proceeds from this event will go to the Kingson Kiwanis which is part of a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.
The play itself is a totally fictionalized story, using some real names of real people and some very loosely related events of the time.
For further information, contact The Dauntless Bookstore, 4790 NE State HWY 104, Port Gamble, WA., 360-297-4043.
