Bremerton Hosts National Urban Waterfront Redevelopment Conference
Revitalized Waterfront Places Bremerton at Forefront for Redevelopment

BREMERTON, Wash. – July 28, 2008 – Community leaders and experts from across North America will convene in Bremerton for the city’s first Urban Waterfront Revitalization Conference to be held Sept. 10-12 at Kitsap Conference Center at Bremerton Harborside.

“We are proud to be hosting this very timely conference,” said Bremerton Mayor Cary Bozeman, who has led the renaissance of his city’s waterfront area, the Harborside District. “More and more cities are realizing that their waterfronts present golden opportunities for economic redevelopment. To succeed, projects must harness the energy and ideas of a wide range of players, from politicians to private sector consultants.”

Attendees will meet and learn from community leaders, port officials, project planners, private developers, state officials and other community leaders from cities including Sausalito, Calif.; Sidney, B.C.; Annapolis, Md.; Olympia, Wash.; Wenatchee, Wash.; and North Vancouver, B.C.

These officials, along with executives from leading solution companies, will give presentations on topics such as financing, transportation planning, public engagement, waterfront promotion, smart growth and environmental sustainability.

“What sets this conference apart is its strong marriage of economics, innovation and sustainability, said P.S. Reilly, president and CEO of the Athena Institute, which is producing the conference. “The event features in-depth profiles of leading communities in the process of revitalizing their waterfronts, and the information and networking will be tremendous resources.” Athena, based in Kirkland, Wash., is a research consultancy that provides resources to help communities, businesses and utilities harness competitive advantage from sustainability and innovation.

The event begins with a Sustainable Shorelines Pre-Conference Workshop at 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 10. Planners, engineers, architects, landscape architects and others will hear about trends in sustainable shoreline development, including emerging green redevelopment rating systems. The event will draw on the experiences of many different cities and their redevelopments, and will feature presentations on a range of topics – from financing to permitting and design.

The conference includes the launch of the Urban Waterfront Alliance. Athena is forming the group to foster networking among service providers and community leaders. The alliance will keep members abreast of shifting best practices for shoreline redevelopment.

“From start to finish, we’ll be showcasing some of the most innovative services and solutions that communities are leveraging to advance their projects,” said Bozeman, whose city has launched one of the nation’s most successful waterfront redevelopments.

Since 2000, public and private entities have invested more than $500 million in Bremerton’s Harborside District, which is on Puget Sound’s Sinclair Inlet. Projects include a $37 million multimodal transit hub and ferry terminal, Kitsap Conference Center, new hotels, commercial office buildings, retail space, condominiums, expanded marina and new Naval Maritime Museum.

The Urban Waterfront Revitalization Conference will be held at Kitsap Conference Center at Bremerton Harborside. Early registration is $250 for representatives from government, academia and non-profits, and $350 for individuals in the private sector.

For more information about the conference and how to register, visit www.ci.bremerton.wa.us and click the Urban Waterfront Revitalization tab.

Volunteers Needed for Union/Tahuya Summer Chum Project

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, enjoy getting in the river and having some fun handling wild salmon, or are able to help record incoming fish data, this is an opportunity for you. The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) is currently seeking volunteers to help with the Summer Chum project on the Union River in Belfair.

The Hood Canal summer chum is an ESA listed species. As an ongoing project since 2000, supplementation of the species has been one of HCSEG’s project priorities. Successful supplementation efforts in the past have stabilized the numbers of returning wild salmon on the Union River, which now has sustainable numbers returning by the thousands each year.
Each year, HCSEG collects 52 pairs of salmon from the Union River for spawning. Eggs collected are raised in wild salmon incubators to minimize chances of mortality. Once hatched, salmon fry are then released into the Tahuya River to supplement the natural spawners. Historically, the Tahuya River, like the Union River was a productive river for the ESA listed salmon. However, decline in fish populations due to over-fishing and alterations in habitat caused their numbers to decline. In fact, prior to HCSEG efforts, the Hood Canal summer chum Tahuya River population was a technically extinct run with only 1-2 fish returning to spawn each year. However, in the past 2 years, we have had 600-700 summer chum return to the Tahuya River as a result of our supplementation project. Continued recovery efforts and supplementation to the Tahuya system should in time replenish the stock to a sustainable level.

If you are available or have students, friends, family or other volunteers that you know of who might be available, this is the time that we need them. The site is watched 24 hours a day, seven days an week from August 15th until October 15th. Shifts are 8 AM-12 PM, 12-5, 5-10 and 10-8 AM.

For those wanting to get involved in community service, give back to the resource, work towards field experience, or a possible scholarship or internship, this is a great opportunity to do something worthwhile. We really need the help and could use your support. If you are available to help observing salmon at night, we have accommodations available at the Union site. For more information about HCSEG’s Union / Tahuya River Salmon trap monitoring, please call (360) 275-3575 or contact Julie at Julie@hcseg.org. You are also welcome to stop in at the HCSEG office located next across the street from Belfair Elementary for volunteer scheduling.

POPE RESOURCES SUBSIDIARY OLYMPIC PROPERTY GROUP AND THE PORT OF KINGSTON ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM.

Kingston, WA (July 7, 2008)--Today Olympic Property Group (OPG) announced the launch of a collaborative sustainable tourism project with the Port of Kingston.

If you visit downtown Kingston this summer, chances are you will see a little green and white bug shaped car. This Global Electric Motorcar, or GEM, is part of an experiment to study new ways to promote sustainable tourism in the area. The GEM car is a street legal electric vehicle that can run at speeds up to 25 mph, making it perfect to zip around town in. Owned by OPG, the car has been loaned to the Port of Kingston who will allow visitors on their guest dock to utilize the vehicle for errands and tours of the Kingston area.

Although the car has only been available to use since June 27th it has already created excitement among boaters and Kingston residents alike. "Feedback is extremely positive and a great way to promote Kingston," said Port of Kingston Director, Mike Bookey. "The idea of a port having an electric car available to see the local community and visit local stores shocks guest boaters in a good way. We tell them it’s just another example of the uncommon good service boaters can expect from the Port of Kingston. Not only does having the GEM car available allow boaters more access to the town of Kingston than they would have otherwise had, visitors are more likely to buy from local merchants than they were when they had to walk long distances or carry purchases with them."

In order to use the GEM you must have your boat moored on the guest dock at the Port of Kingston. After that, it is just a matter of putting your name on the list and filling out a comment card after your drive. Due to the popularity of the car, usage time has been limited to 1 hour time blocks. Even so, there is frequently a waiting list.

Intrigued with the possible uses for a car like this in its own real estate developments and in neighboring communities, Olympic Property Group purchased the GEM car in June of 2007 to test different applications within the community. This summer it will be located at the Port of Kinston where visitors to the guest dock will be able to use it free of charge. Guests will now be able to make a quick trip to the grocery store, hardware store, or even just into town without having to carry their purchases on the half mile or more trek back to their boat.

The GEM could have much broader uses than just as a visitor vehicle at the Port. "An ideal application is for traveling from outlying housing to small commercial villages such as Port Gamble, Kingston, and Poulsbo" said Jon Rose, President of OPG. "It reduces congestion, noise, and emissions, and parks in about half the space of a conventional vehicle." With the rising costs of fuel, crowded ferry boats, and full parking lots, Rose foresees a day when owners of mini-vehicles are rewarded by having access to reduced ferry fees and half-sized parking spaces.
The information gathered from the GEM project will be used to help OPG design its master planned communities, many of which will not be completed for decades. "Designing with an eye to the future is critical in creating communities that maintain their vitality" said Rose. "Plus, the GEM car is just really fun to drive."
