TOXINS WE ALL LIVE WITH and Annual Low-Tide Beach Walk

Hi there,

We just completed two very busy days here getting all sorts of work done! United Way Day of Caring was Friday, when we had 17 volunteers doing over 70 hours of work! We got the gazebo painted, the trails cleared, the boardwalk at the Triangle stablized and almost done, and the Tree House almost all painted, plus a few other small jobs. Whew!

Since we had the donation from Premier Rentals of painting scaffolding for the weekend, we gathered another small crew of Stillwaters volunteers to paint on Saturday, and the Tree House is looking good.

This Thursday, the 26th, at 7 pm is our next great speaker seminar on Toxins in our bodies and homes, and Saturday, July 5, brings our midday Low-Tide Beach Walk. Details on both are below. Please call or email to pre-register if you can (helps us plan), but for these 2 events, you can just come that day, too. Thanks!

Naomi

The City of Poulsbo Turns 100 – Join the Celebration!

What makes Poulsbo different from other communities in the Pacific Northwest?
Natural splendor accentuated by a culture all its own…Poulsbo’s pace is maintained today by the same type of resourceful, exuberant people that settled it over a century ago. Boasting pride in a lively Norwegian heritage, Poulsbo’s story is written on the face of the community, on its buildings, streets, and bay.

History is not just about the past; it’s about how we as humans have learned and chosen to live. The combination of fjord-like Liberty Bay in the shadow of the Olympic Mountains and the opportunities a budding country could offer attracted people that chose to live a certain way.

The Scandinavians that endured an ocean passage and cross-country trek knew what they had when they settled here: peace and tranquility; a waterway that allowed for transportation, commerce and harvest; trees used to build businesses, shelter, and infrastructure; and a familiar way of life that gave them comfort and stability.

The place we call Poulsbo has been a seasonal gathering place for the Suquamish Native Americans; site of logging camps and a dogfish oil business; and home to the largest codfish industry of its kind. Poulsbo has felt the influence of nearby naval installations and become a bustling hub of communication, technology, and learning.

The establishment of parks, transformation of streets, development of housing centers, parkways, businesses and a college campus, has changed the appearance of Poulsbo. A midst the growth and change, Poulsbonians today carry on a tradition of annual festivals, events, parades, and parties that honor the community’s roots and instill a sense of place in young residents and newcomers.

Bainbridge Arts and Crafts Announces Major Gift

An extremely generous donor has given Bainbridge Arts and Crafts one million dollars to establish an endowment, providing BAC with a lasting and reliable source of funding. The terms of the restricted gift ensure that the principal will be permanently maintained, while providing BAC with an income equal to about 6% of its current operating budget.

Susan Jackson, BAC’s Executive Director, says “The fact that a serious and thoughtful philanthropist would invest this level of support in the Gallery makes me extremely proud of the Staff and Board and all that we’ve accomplished. Unfortunately, the donor’s wish for anonymity prevents us from publicly expressing our gratitude with parades and mariachi bands and champagne.”

Ellin Spenser, President of the Board of Trustees, says “The bumpy economy had recently forced Susan to cut payroll by 20%, so this astonishing gift came at exactly the right moment. This endowment will help to secure the financial health of Bainbridge Arts and Crafts not only today but for many years to come. To the donor, whoever you may be, the Board and the Staff send you our deepest thanks.”

Susan Jackson adds, “I hope that this extraordinary gift will encourage other generous donors to consider a contribution to The Bainbridge Arts and Crafts Endowment. It’s a terrific way to invest in the future of the arts on Bainbridge Island.”

Port Gamble Sustainability Festival Involves Whole Community

Great Peninsula Future Festival
August 2-3, 2008, Port Gamble WA
Building a sustainable future—together.

NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Gene Bullock, 360-394-5635; bullockg@earthlink.net

Port Gamble Sustainability Festival Involves Whole Community
Dozens of community organizations are involved in organizing a sustainability festival in historic Port Gamble, August 2-3. The outdoor festival will mix headline entertainment, live music, local food, hand-made crafts and a farmers market with exhibits, speakers and workshops focused on the theme of sustainability.
“We want to bring community leaders, environmentalists, educators, green business leaders and citizens together in a festival atmosphere to talk about sustainability,” said Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer, who is spearheading the event planning. “We decided that learning how to live a greener lifestyle should be fun.”
“We want families to come for the fun and take away ideas they can use in their own neighborhoods and communities,” explained Bauer. “We’ll have lots of activities for kids, including clowns, magic, puppet shows, story tellers, jugglers, mask making, a walk-in mobile salmon and a trash art contest.”
The festival will feature dozens of entertainers on three stages, including such headline entertainers as the Flying Karamazov Brothers, jazz singing legend Alice Stuart, an internationally known clown, a magic show and many others.
How It All Started
The Great Peninsula Future Festival was inspired by a Kitsap community workshop last October led by Larry Seaquist (State Representative for the 26th District). Some 60 Kitsap community leaders gathered to brainstorm on strategies for achieving a sustainable Kitsap. The group included two mayors (Kim Abel, Darlene Kordonowy) two state legislators (Derek Kilmer, Larry Seaquist) and two Kitsap County commissioners (Steve Bauer, Josh Brown). The workshop was sponsored by West Sound Conservation Council, WSU-Kitsap Extension and Sustainable Bremerton.
Bauer was so impressed with the level of enthusiasm and interest in sustainability he wanted to find a way to build on the interest and involve the entire community. He talked about it with his sister, Sandra Bauer, who was one of the original organizers of the popular Oregon Country Fair.
By the end of the conversation, they had come up with the idea of organizing an annual sustainability festival. Dozens of Kitsap community leaders answered Steve’s invitation to form a festival planning council. Jon Rose of Olympic Property Group generously offered Port Gamble as the host site on a prime summer weekend, August 2-3.
The festival has since earned broad support among Kitsap business and community service organizations, as well as volunteer groups all across Kitsap County. Major sponsors include Kitsap County Commissioners Steve Bauer and Josh Brown; the Kitsap News Group family of newspapers, WSU-Kitsap Extension, Home Builders Association of Kitsap County, Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, Port Gamble (Olympic Property Group), Wet Apple Media (Kitsap Business Journal). Other sponsors include Puget Sound Energy, Port Madison Enterprises (Suquamish Tribal business unit), Town and Country Market, West Sound Utilities, Port of Bremerton Kitsap SEED, Kitsap County Solid Waste Division and Monty Mahan, candidate for SK County Commissioner.

Festival organizers include volunteers from Stillwaters Environmental Education Center, Kitsap Audubon Society, WSU-Kitsap Extension, Kitsap Community and Agricultural Alliance, Sustainable Bremerton, SCALLOPS (Sustainable Communities All Over Puget Sound), Washington State Farmers Market Association, Kitsap Conservation Voters, Poulsbo Farmers Market, Kitsap Citizens For Responsible Planning and New Old Time Chautauqua.

GOLF CHANNEL AMATEUR TOUR COMES TO PORT LUDLOW JUNE 22

PORT LUDLOW, Wash. (June 17, 2008) – The Golf Channel Amateur Tour of
Seattle will be making the Port Ludlow Golf Club an integral stop on their tour
this year, drawing amateur golfers from across the nation to the scenic
seaside town nestled on the shores of the Olympic Peninsula.
Port Ludlow's tournament will serve as the mid-season championship, the
second most important event on the tour, which is comprised of 12
tournaments throughout Washington from April to September. The tour's
national championship takes place in October in Orlando.
"Port Ludlow embodies all the beauty of the Northwest and is everything a
golf resort should hope to be," Frank Fauls, Seattle tour director, said. "It's
simply spectacular with the Puget Sound, mountains, spa and scenic course."
The tournament kicks off Saturday evening with a welcome reception and
book signing with David Wood, author of Around the World in 80 Rounds.
Wood is a renowned speaker, writer and adventurer who has played some of
the world's most extreme courses. Each entrant will receive a signed copy of
the book. Tour members will also receive a 20 percent discount off The
Resort At Port Ludlow golf as well as lodging, throughout the year.
Tucked away on the Olympic Peninsula of the northern Puget Sound, The
Resort At Port Ludlow is located 90 miles from the Seattle Tacoma
International airport. By car, visitors travel 15 minutes from the Sea-Tac
International airport to a ferry, unwind during a 30 minute ferry ride while
leaving the city behind, and then continue by car for another 45 minutes
traveling over the Hood Canal Bridge. Arriving by plane is also becoming a
popular option as Port Ludlow is reachable by taking a short 15-minute
complimentary shuttle from the Sea-Tac International airport to Kenmore Air's
hub at Lake Union and then hopping on a 15 minute seaplane flight directly
into Port Ludlow Marina. Port Ludlow's secluded location is what makes it so
special; it's easily reached yet removed from the fast pace and demands of
urban life.
For more information, log onto www.portludlowresort.com or call Port Ludlow
Golf Club at (888) 793-1186.

Orchard Theater showtimes beginning JUNE 20th!!

Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2008 16:16:37 -0700
Hi folks!
Young At Heart and The Goonies end Thursday!
Here are the showtimes……….
Young At Heart 2:30 and 7:10
The Goonies 4:50

Starts Friday!!
The She Found Me R
Directed by Helen Hunt
Starring Helen Hunt, Bette Midler, Colin Firth, Matthew Broderick, Ben Shankman
Friday, June 20th thru Sunday, June 22nd 12:10 2:30 4:50 7:10

Monday, June 23rd thru Thursday, June 26th 2:30 4:50 7:10

The move from actor to director can be a difficult one, but actress Helen Hunt makes the transition seem effortless with THEN SHE FOUND ME. Hunt, who also produced and co wrote the film, plays April Epner, a down-on-her-luck schoolteacher who longs to have a child. April's chances of bringing a baby into the world are diminished when her husband, Ben (Matthew Broderick), leaves her, and more bad news follows when her adoptive mother dies. The beleaguered April subsequently forms an unexpected bond with her real mother, the overbearing TV host Bernice (Bette Midler), and takes tentative steps towards motherhood with a new man in her life, the bumbling Frank (Colin Firth). Hunt's film, which is based on the novel of the same name by Elinor Lipman, is likely to win over fans of classic rom-coms such as WHEN HARRY MET SALLY and YOU'VE GOT MAIL. At its heart the film poses some thoughtful observations on what a late-30s woman goes through when she is facing a possibly childless future. But Hunt also stirs some generous scoops of humor into the plot, providing light relief from her central character's plight, and also demonstrating her range as a writer/director. The cast members are uniformly excellent throughout, with Firth and Hunt giving strong performances that are helped along by a supporting cast that provides most of the comic relief. Hunt even finds time to provide a small role for the writer Salman Rushdie, who plays a doctor.

In a world of six billion people, it only takes one to change your life. In actor and filmmaker Tom McCarthy’s follow-up to his award winning directorial debut The Station Agent, Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) stars as a disillusioned Connecticut economics professor whose life is transformed by a chance encounter in New York City. Sixty-two-year-old Walter Vale (Jenkins) is sleepwalking through his life. Having lost his passion for teaching and writing, he fills the void by unsuccessfully trying to learn to play classical piano. When his college sends him to Manhattan to attend a conference, Walter is surprised to find a young couple has taken up residence in his apartment. Victims of a real estate scam, Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), a Syrian man, and Zainab (Danai Gurira), his Senegalese girlfriend, have nowhere else to go. In the first of a series of tests of the heart, Walter reluctantly allows the couple to stay with him. Touched by his kindness, Tarek, a talented musician, insists on teaching the aging academic to play the African drum. The instrument’s exuberant rhythms revitalize Walter’s faltering spirit and open his eyes to a vibrant world of local jazz clubs and Central Park drum circles. As the friendship between the two men deepens, the differences in culture, age and temperament fall away. After being stopped by police in the subway, Tarek is arrested as an undocumented citizen and held for deportation. As his situation turns desperate, Walter finds himself compelled to help his new friend with a passion he thought he had long ago lost. When Tarek’s beautiful mother Mouna (Hiam Abbass) arrives unexpectedly in search of her son, the professor’s personal commitment develops into an unlikely romance. And it’s through these new found connections with these virtual strangers that Walter is awakened to a new world and a new life.

Opening This Friday!! 3 Showings ONLY!!
Blade Runner: The Final Cut R
Starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Daryl Hannah, Edward James Olmos
Directed by Ridley Scott
Friday, June 20th thru Sunday, June 22nd 9:10

Twenty-five years after the initial release of BLADE RUNNER, director Ridley Scott uses archival footage to re-create his original vision for the sci-fi classic. Based on a story by Philip K. Dick, the film is set in Los Angeles in 2019. Earth has become a polluted and miserable dystopia, and many people have fled to live "Off World" on other planets. This dreary vision of the future features replicants: lifelike robots built as slaves for human use. When a replicant escapes his owner, a "blade runner" is called in to hunt him down and kill him. Enter Harrison Ford as the retired blade runner Rick Deckard. He is pulled out of retirement to help catch four escaped replicants: Batty (Rutger Hauer), Leon (Brion James), Pris (Darryl Hannah), and Zhora (Joanna Cassidy.) Despite his distaste for the job, Deckard is soon hot on their heels, tracking them down one by one through the over-crowded, crumbling city streets. In the midst of his hunt, Deckard becomes involved with a beautiful replicant named Rachael (Sean Young). Rachel has fled her owner, and Deckard rightfully should kill her. However, the two fall in love, and after some startling revelations, they are both soon on the run from the very authorities that once employed Deckard. This final cut is a bleaker, more cynical version of an already dark film, which might explain why the studio insisted on a softer, more optimistic ending when it was first released. While some superfans might take issue with some of the revelatory new twists, they will no doubt delight in the quality of the digital restoration. The special effects were already impressive for 1982, but these new touch-ups give them a look that appears just as sharp and imaginative as the sci-fi films of today.

Port Gamble Sustainability Festival Involves Whole Community

Dozens of community organizations are involved in organizing a sustainability festival in historic Port Gamble, August 2-3. The festival will mix headline entertainment, live music, local food, hand-made crafts and a farmers market with exhibits, speakers and workshops focused on the theme of sustainability.

We move from a smokey 1920's Chicago Speakeasy, where we hear such songs as "Dr. Rhythm" and "What's New" to the Bowery for the classic "Pennies from Heaven" and others. The ever popular "Your Hit Parade" takes us into the 1930's, segueing into a WWII USO Show for several songs including "Personality" and culminating with the Academy Award winning "Swinging on a Star".

Trash Art Contest

Great Peninsula Future Festival Sponsors
Trash Art Contest for Kids and Adults
The Great Peninsula Future Festival will feature a “Trash Art” Contest for children and adults. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Ages 10 and under; 11 to 16; and adults. The contest reflects the “sustainability” theme of the nonprofit outdoor festival, August 2-3 in historic Port Gamble.
Groups or individuals can enter artwork, sculptures, murals, etc., made from clean, sanitary trash—materials that would otherwise be recycled or discarded. Entries will be displayed during the two-day festival and prizes awarded Sunday afternoon, August 3.
“The focus of the festival is that learning how to live a greener, more sustainable lifestyle should be fun,” explained Sandra Bauer, chair of the organizing committee. “The trash art contest is just one of the ways we’ll involve kids. We want to stimulate their imaginations and encourage them to think about the tons of stuff people throw away. They are the ones who will inherit the planet.”
According to Bauer, every year the United States generates some 230 million tons of "trash"--about 4.6 pounds per person per day. Less than a fourth of it is recycled; the rest is incinerated or buried in landfills. “This is a big problem for the environment,” said Bauer. “We’re producing waste products faster than nature can break them down and using up our resources faster than they can be replaced. We need to rethink our habits and lifestyle choices, because this can’t continue. A simple and obvious choice is to cut back on the amount of waste by reusing and throwing out less in the first place.”
The outdoor festival will mix nonstop family entertainment by top performers, wide-ranging activities for children, healthy local foods, hand-made crafts and educational displays of green products, concepts and technologies.
“Families will come for the fun and give us a teaching moment. We’ll use the opportunity to open their eyes to new possibilities for a greener, more sustainable lifestyle,” said Bauer.
The future festival is the brainchild of Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer, who persuaded his sister, Sandra, to take on the job of chairing the event. Steve was inspired by a sustainability workshop last October led by Rep. Larry Seaquist, in which some 60 Kitsap community leaders spent two days brainstorming on ways to achieve a more sustainable Kitsap County. Steve was so impressed with the level of enthusiasm and interest, he wanted to find ways to build on the workshop and involve the larger community. Many of those involved in the workshop are now part of the festival organizing committee. An experienced event planner, Sandra Bauer was one of the original organizers of the popular Oregon Country Fair.
The GP Future Festival has broad support in the Kitsap business community. Major sponsors include Sound Publishing and its family of Kitsap newspapers; the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County; Wet Apple Media, publishers of the Kitsap Business Journal; The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe; Port Gamble (Olympic Property Group); and Kitsap County Commissioners Steve Bauer and Josh Brown.

I'm heading for Hansville where the low will be at 11:40 and a -4.2.

VERY low and with the gentle slope at Point No Point the beach will extend way out past it's normal area. Nice that it is the middle of the week and the weather isn't great because there will be very few people on the beach. I'll get a few pictures of the extreme low and post them later.

I happen to have a meeting in Hansville so it is very convenient to check out the tides although it would be fun to be on our own beach to see the low tide there.

Going to miss it today? Tomorrow is a -4.1 which will look just about the same. For those not used to tides or who don't follow the tides, I get excited at anything that is a negative, very excited lower than a -3.0 so you can imagine - -4.2 - WOW!
