Great Peninsula Future Festival
August 2-3, 2008, Port Gamble WA
Building a sustainable future—together.

NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sound Publishing Becomes Major Sponsor
For Great Peninsula Future Festival
Sound Publishing has become a major sponsor for the Great Peninsula Future Festival (GPFF), August 2-3, 2008, in Port Gamble, Washington.
Sound Publishing is the largest publisher of community and suburban newspapers in Washington and is also one of the area’s largest commercial web printers. In Kitsap County alone, Sound publishes eight newspapers: North Kitsap Herald, Kingston Community News, Bainbridge Review, Central Kitsap Reporter, Bremerton Patriot, Port Orchard Independent, Northwest Navigator and the Kitsap Free Daily.
Other major sponsors are Kitsap County, the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County, Wet Apple Media, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe and Port Gamble (Olympic Property Group).
Areas sponsors include Puget Sound Energy and Power Trip Energy Corp. Event sponsors include Port Madison Enterprises (the Suquamish Tribal business unit), West Sound Utilities, Town & Country Market and Pollen Collection and Sales.
The all volunteer-organized event is a nonprofit outdoor festival centered around the theme of “sustainability.” The idea for the festival came to Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer following a community workshop last October on sustainability. It was sponsored by West Sound Conservation Council and led by Larry Seaquist, state representative from the 26th legislative district.
Seaquist has used his innovative CoLab (community laboratory) format for other workshops in the U.S. and abroad. The workshop in Bremerton involved some 60 Kitsap community leaders, including commissioners Bauer and Josh Brown, state senator Derek Kilmer, Bainbridge Mayor Darlene Kordonowy and former Port Orchard Mayor Kim Abel.
“I was so impressed with the level of enthusiasm and interest in sustainability, I talked to my sister, Sandra, about ways to build on the workshop,” said Bauer. “Sandra is a pro when it comes to event planning. She is one of the original organizers of the Oregon Country Fair.
“By the end of the conversation, we had decided on holding an annual event focused on sustainability that would bring citizens, educators, community leaders, environmental groups and green businesses together in a festival atmosphere. People would come for the party and give us a ‘teaching moment,’ said Bauer. “The mix would include live music, entertainment, healthy food and halnd-made crafts, plus engaging interactive displays on green products, concepts and services.”
Jon Rose of Olympic Property Group generously donated the use of historic Port Gamble on a prime summer weekend, August 2-3, 2008. The GPFF planning council is made up of other CoLab alumni and volunteers from more than a dozen Kitsap community organizations, including Stillwaters Environmental Center, Kitsap County Extension of Washington State University, Kitsap Audubon Society, Poulsbo Farmers Market, Sustainable Bremerton, WA State Farmers Market Association, Kitsap Community and Agricultural Alliance, West Sound Conservation Council, Kitsap Conservation Voters and the New Old Time Chautauqua.
To learn how you can get involved as a sponsor, exhibitor, vendor or volunteer, visit the GPFF web site: www.GreatPeninsulaFutureFestival.org or contact Sandra Bauer at 425-786-7495; email sanbauer@aol.com.

Agate Pass Café Opens In Suquamish

Metropolitan Bistro Brings Stylish Tastes To Revitalized Waterfront District

SUQUAMISH, April, 2008- Diners with discerning palates need look no further than the new Agate Pass Café in Downtown Suquamish.
With a menu that includes pan-seared sockeye and stuffed date appetizers, the restaurant serves up fusion inspired foods that contend with the savviest of urban eateries. Each course has been carefully chosen by owner and chef Marty Bracken, not only for flavor but also the availability of fresh, local ingredients.

“We try to prepare dishes with as much local, organic ingredients as possible,” said Bracken.

The wine list at Agate Pass Café includes a cabernet port created on Bainbridge Island. Local cheeses also compliment the appetizer and salad menus. Even seasonal greens from area farmers markets are given prominence in dishes when they are available.

Bracken, a Seattle transplant with decades of culinary and restaurant management experience, decided she wanted to open her own restaurant after doing the same for business owners in the city.

“It’s always been a dream of mine. And, after working that hard to open up a restaurant, I decided I wouldn’t do it again for anyone but myself,” said Bracken.

Chef Bracken and partner Stacy Grega began leasing the property in Downtown Suquamish late last year, spending several months refurbishing the building before opening their doors. After upgrading the kitchen with state-of-the-art equipment, the two focused on creating an intimate dining experience for patrons. Art from two local sculptors adorn the walls, hand crafted tile mosaics finish the bar and hardwood floors compliment the space. There is even the requisite outside seating area for the warm summer months with a waterfront view of Agate Passage.

“We wanted to create a warm atmosphere, I think we’ve accomplished that,” said Grega.

The Agate Pass Café is one of the first businesses to locate to the Downtown Suquamish Waterfront, an area the Suquamish Tribe is redeveloping for tourism. Several spaces for boutique businesses are also being considered for the properties adjacent to the café. A traditional Salish Community House is also under construction across the street with plans for completion by the end of the year.

“The community has been so responsive to our business here. It’s been amazing. Even when we were working on the restaurant, people would come up and ask us when we’d be open,” said Bracken.

The Agate Pass Café is open to the public Friday, April 25, 2008. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, with brunch on Sundays. The restaurant is closed every Monday and Tuesday. For more information on the Agate Pass Café please visit their website at www.agatepasscafe.com , contact Marty Bracken at mbracken66@earhlink.net or stop by the café at 7220 NE Park Way, Suquamish, WA 98392.

Anything Goes, May 2-18

BHS sets sail with the Cole Porter
American Classic, BHS sets sail with the Cole Porter
American Classic, Anything Goes, May 2-18, 2008

APRIL 15, 2008: BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Bainbridge High School drama department is proud to present the Cole Porter American classic, Anything Goes, in six performances this May.

“Anything Goes is a show about exuberance, joy, love and the zany, crazy philosophy declared in the title,” said Seb Nielsen, Director. “The Bainbridge High School cast and crew have brilliantly embraced the challenge of Anything Goes and this production is guaranteed to refresh and energize audiences of all ages,” he added. Debbie Hill, BHS Choir Director, serves as Vocal Music Director and Marie Elena Baker is Costume Designer.

Nielsen’s philosophy as a Director includes encouraging as much student participation as possible. “The Anything Goes’ band is composed and led by students and the choreography by BHS juniors Katie Donais, Sophie Tschida and Maggie Hotchkiss leaves you wondering if they have somehow channeled Bob Fosse!” he said. Over forty BHS students appear in the song-and-dance filled production.

Anything Goes premiered in 1934 and has been revived multiple times in the United States and abroad to much acclaim. A timeless tale of boy-meets-girl and the intrigue and complications that ensue, the story is wrapped around an enchanting Porter score that sparkles with some of the most memorable songs from the American musical theatre songbook ever - Anything Goes, It's De-Lovely, You’re The Top, I Get A Kick Out of You, Easy to Love and Blow, Gabriel, Blow are but a few songs in the tune-packed score.

Performances are May 2nd through May 18th (Fridays - May 2nd and May 9th at 7:30 PM, Saturdays - May 3rd, 10th and 17th at 7:30 PM and Sunday May 18th at 2:30 PM) at the Bainbridge High School theatre. Tickets are just $5 for children, ASB students and seniors and $10 for all others. Tickets may be purchased at the door when it opens 45 minutes prior to curtain. For more information, call BHS at 206-842-2634.

The BHS production of Anything Goes is produced through special arrangement with Tams Witmark.

"MENU FOR THE FUTURE" -- A Class at Stillwaters

For centuries food has been used to mark the change of seasons, celebrate events, and bring together the family or community. But now it is also a global economic commodity and a multi-billion dollar industry, and a point of confusion as we struggle with the ramifications of genetically engineered or modified foods, organic options, local supplies of foods, vegetarian diets and more.

There are many implications of our food choices, some of which we seldom consider. The Northwest Earth Institute has just completed their newest class guide, “Menu for the Future”, to consider those implications.

Stillwaters Environmental Center will be using this guide in their next Sustainability Discussion Course for six Thursdays starting May 8th. Classes are held on Thursday evenings, from 7 – 9 pm. Each class is limited to 12 participants.

Topics for "Menu for the Future" include:
“What’s Eating America?” – the effects of modern industrial eating habits on culture, society and Earth.
“Anonymous Food” – the historical shift from family farms near home, to industrial agriculture and getting your food from the whole world and what that means ecologically.
“Farming for the Future” – emerging alternatives in food and choices individuals can make.
“You Are what You Eat” – the human health perspective and food policies that shape our well-being.
“Toward a Just Food System” – issues of hunger, equity and Fair Trade bring in the role of all of us, from individuals to governments, in creating a more just food system.
“Choices for Change” – the inspiration and advice for choosing local, seasonal and sustainably grown and produced food for you and your family.
The cost for participating in one of the courses is $30/person, or $40/household if you share a book. Evening classes will start at 7 pm on Thursday, May 8, and continue every Thursday until June 12. Please pre-register or get more information by calling Joleen at 360-297-2876.
