Decades: A Retrospective

From the 1970's to the Present, Lesley Kabelac's artistic memoir is a trip through time in a variety of medium. Beginning with her first watercolors in the 1970's an moving to the prints and paintings of the present, her new show is as full as her life story, told in the way only Lesley can. The past four decades have been rich and diverse.

Lesley has always been an artist at heart. From her early childhood doodles and designs she moved on to the art of movement, first as a skater with Ice Capade's where she met and married, to teaching ballet as a young mother of three. But she was always drawn back to her first love. And in the seventies when she went back to college to study nursing she found her passion in art class. Needless to say, she is a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Artist, but not a nurse!

It was at Olympic College, that she started growing the person we all know and love. And it was there that she met the life long friends that would go on to form Collective Visions Gallery. As a co-founding member, she has given glimpses over the years into her work, piece by piece as a painter and printmaker. But this show is different. Her current show is a timeline of her life and love. Her story, told through her art.

From her earliest watercolors, vibrant and innocent in the 1970's, to dark paintings during life's struggles, and prints created with intricate detail as her children grew and she had more time to work, she walks you thru her life. The first chapters in her current show are the story of a young wife and mother, then a full-time working artist. It is colorful and warm, at times dark and gloomy, but always insightful. With almost half a century of vision and life's blood poured out on canvas and paper you get to know the real Lesley. At 75 she is a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. But most important, she is an artist. Art is her story and the story of life around her.

As you walk thru her show, be encouraged to remember your life over the years. How does "Decades" relate to your life? Was your life full of color, did it have lots of shadows, were there more highs, or lows? How did you capture your life? Lesley did it with brushes, pastels and ink. But for her family and friends it is framed forever in our hearts.

Projection Artist Sid Arthur Collaborates with Pianist James Quitslund
in Declassified Chamber Music Program’s Opening Numbers by Zoltán Kodály
Sunday, April 27 @ 3:00 p.m. @ Bainbridge Performing Arts
Projection artist Sid Arthur collaborated with pianist James Quitslund in the presentation of two piano miniatures opening BPA’s April 27 Declassified Chamber Music Program. Arthur was charged with developing resonant imagery for two pieces by the Hungarian Zoltán Kodály, works that Quitslund described as “laments for the fallen, and for the breakdown in European affairs and the uncertainty of the future.” One of the works, Inscription on a Grave,” Quitslund continued, “is predominantly tragic and heroic, but there is also a hymn that contrasts with the crashing dissonances, and the turmoil fades into harmony and then silence at the end.”
After digesting Quitslund’s words and listening to recordings of Kodály’s works, Arthur soon ventured out to the graveyards, visiting Lake View Cemetery and the Veteran’s Memorial, snapping hundreds of photos, which formed the basis for his projections. He strung together more than 2000 black and white images, overlaying them with original color animations. Inspired by street-corner graffiti to the techniques used by great film makers, Arthur has developed a singular style, both in his paintings and drawings as well as his animations and films. A graduate of Northwest College of Art and BPA’s Graphic Designer, he is currently making himself known both in the Bainbridge community and the Seattle area.
BPA’s April Declassified Chamber Music Program features the works of three Eastern European masters from the 1890s to the 1930s, and showcases a crowd of Island musicians and their friends, including violinists Justine Jeanotte , Thomas Monk and Patricia Strange; violists Reid Blickenstaff and Peggy Spencer; cellists Marshall Brown, Barbara Deppe and Priscilla Jones; Kate Kralik, flute; Amy Duerr-Day , oboe; Patti Beasley, clarinet; Judy Lawrence, bassoon; Don Warkentin, horn; and pianists Donna Adele Horning and James Quitslund.
The concert is at Bainbridge Performing Arts on Sunday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets, $10 per person, may be purchased by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North , Bainbridge Island . An Unshakable Force Behind Community Theatre - Louise Mills
After learning to sew at the age of ten, Louise Mills took up fencing and the bagpipes in her teen years, studied drama (costumes and props) in high school, and pursued a brief stint of professional theatre training before college. In 1956, she, along with her friend and pianist Corinne Berg, founded Bainbridge Light Opera Association (BLOA), known today as Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA). A vigorous and determined presence behind the Island’s theatre scene (she also founded Island Theatre), Louise Mills has always been interested in getting others to act, saying “I get people to do things they didn’t know they wanted to do.”
And now she’s done it again. Louise Mills Presents: What is This Thing Called Love? ~ A Musical Revue opens April 11 at BPA. Jazz musicians and singers croon, strut, and serenade on a set loosely based on a fictional Parisian night club called, “Chez Louise.” Local artists don tuxedoes and period gowns mined from Louise’s extensive collection of vintage fashions to perform favorite love songs ranging from show tunes to jazz standards.
Louise Mills Presents… is designed and stage directed by Michele McCrackin. The cast includes Sharon Acton, Susan Anderson, Susan Bray, Dick & Marilyn Dearsley, Rusty Flounders, Keith Granger, Ginni Hawkins, Claire Hosterman, Barbara Hume, Rozzella & Chris Kolbegger, Adele Berg-Layton, Mike Loudon, Rich McAllister, Kate Matteson, Michelle Odell, Mark Soltys, Jackie & Lucas Stewart, Mary Joan Zakovy, and the Bainbridge Island vocal group Side By Side.
Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. plus Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Tickets, $15 per person, may be purchased by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North , Bainbridge Island . BPA Box Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance. The production has one intermission and is suitable for musical theatre lovers of all ages. Proceeds benefit Bainbridge Performing Arts.

The City also collects Business and Occupation (B & O) tax from licensed businesses under state law. Initial license fees are $25 for small businesses (those receiving less than $18,000 in annual income) or $50 for regular businesses registering before business commences; the fees double for companies filing after beginning business activity. West Sound Academy Senior Art Show Retrospective:

The Island Gallery presents the portfolios of five talented young artists as they prepare to graduate from high school: Sarah Renea Browning, Lila Burns, Stephanie Guy, Miriam Hershberg, and Lisa Jackson.

Show Run: April 4 – 30, 2008

Artists’ Reception: First Friday, April 4, 2008, 6-8 p.m.

Location: The Island Gallery, 100-106 Madison Avenue N., Bainbridge Island, Washington

West Sound Academy, located in Poulsbo, Washington, offers an integrated arts and academics program where students are exposed to a full array of art forms. From the beginning, they take a semester each of exploratory level visual arts, such as media arts, music, theatre, and dance. After this, students choose from more specialized courses, including architecture, videography, printmaking, graphic design, web design, painting, drawing, sculpture, illustration, and photography. Students can also design their own courses via an independent study with a mentor from the faculty or the community. West Sound Art Faculty members, who have been instrumental in developing the talents of this fine group of artists, are Greg MacDonald, Linn DeNesti, and Leigh Metteer.

The Artists, in their own words:

Sarah Renea Browning, Bainbridge Island: When I was little, my mother didn’t give me coloring books. She said that it limited creativity, and I would thank her later. Thus, when most kids were coloring-in Barney, I was drawing my own. My mother is an artist and my father is an engineer and inventor. This makes for a very creative atmosphere to grow up in. They have always been supportive of me and my passion for the arts. I have lived on Bainbridge Island my entire life, except for two years during which I lived in Spain. Through my travels I have been exposed to many types of art in several different countries. I started painting when I was in middle school, both on my own and in class. Painting is something that I have always done in my free time, to the exclusion of other art forms. From the beginning I have challenged myself to try something new with every piece. I have decided to pursue art as a profession, and possibly become an art teacher. I plan to gain a liberal arts education, majoring in painting or illustration. I cannot imagine a life without creating art.

Lila Burns, Kingston: Lila’s interests have always bounced between folk music and visual art. Marc Bell of Nogadod, Gary Baseman of The Teacher’s Pet and The Low Brow Art Movement distorted her ideas, fed her sense of humor and made her work a little more visually interesting. She was dead-set on becoming a fashion designer until 9th grade when she tried making theatre costumes and bagged the idea altogether. Amelia Thomas Stier introduced her to graphic design and flipped her ambitions and pursuits every which way. Currently, she is fast on her way to art school and is mulling over her choice between several different colleges. She plans on majoring in graphic design, living in a box because of the high costs of art school, and playing her music whenever she gets the chance. Until then, she’ll be enjoying her last few months of high school and the sunny, sunny springtime!

Stephanie Guy, Burton: My mom is an artist; therefore, I always assumed that I would become one as well. I have been creating art since I was little, but was always frustrated with the result. When it came time to think about what I would do after high school, I was sure that I would attend an art college. Eventually I realized I had other interests as well. One big problem was that my insistent perfectionism and need for detail drove me crazy. But that is the style I am comfortable with, and I can't imagine doing artwork any other way. The illustrations of Arthur Rackham are a huge influence on the style of my artwork, with his attention to intricate details and strange imagination. Art will always have some presence in my life.

Miriam Hershberg, Bainbridge Island: Miriam likes tattoos, muscle cars, music, and comics. Once upon a time she ventured into the world of pastels and paints and then realized she wasn’t that enthused about it, so she moved on to her longtime passion of designing tattoos and black and white pen drawings. And so, the story continues because she’s going to college and is stoked to get out of high school. Forever. She has no idea what she wants to study in college except she wants to make more art and do some tattoos. Although she’s still planning to do art in college, she is not going to art school.

Lisa Jackson, Suquamish: I am a Suquamish Tribal member, living in the Suquamish Tribal community. This community has influenced my entire life. Since I was twelve I have gradually taught myself the patterns of my culture’s designs, creating traditional Salish weavings and teaching other youth within my community. I have also created logos and paintings of the Native American designs and I enjoy being involved with my culture. Through all the wonderful art classes at West Sound Academy I have learned a way of looking at normal objects from a different viewpoint. With all the techniques and painting skills I have learned I will surely keep creating art in the future. Art is part of my daily life and will always remain that way.

Bainbridge Island Celebrates National Poetry Month ~ April 2008

“In 1972 I began teaching a poetry workshop at the soon-to-be arson-immolated building of Bainbridge High School under the auspices of Olympic College Extension Courses,” writes retired BHS English and drama teacher Bob McAllister in his introduction to the Bainbridge Performing Arts Gallery Exhibit Poetry on Bainbridge: How It Began. “The first class was comprised of students, neophyte writers, a few housewives, and a couple of guys who wanted to test the waters . . . Over the years, the ensuing tides of poetry on this Island, and of poets who pursue the fretful muse, have continued to swell.”

Although there were undoubtedly poets wandering Bainbridge Island before 1972, it was McAllister’s class that first drew them together to form Bainbridge Island’s thriving poetry community – one that went on to produce Exhibition magazine, the NW Artists & Poets Calendar, the annual San Carlos Poetry Readings, and the plethora of awards, poetry workshop and classes, chapbooks, readings, and inspiration that continues today. It’s not surprising that National Poetry Month receives such a rousing welcome on Bainbridge.

Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month brings together publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools, and poets around the country to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.

Local poets and poetry lovers – clear your calendars! Here’s what’s in store on Bainbridge Island and in North Kitsap County:

Poetry Corners: Approximately thirty poster-size poems by Bainbridge and North Kitsap poets are displayed during April in windows and venues throughout downtown Bainbridge Island. This year’s theme is “change.” A complete list of poets, poems, and venues will be posted on the Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council’s webpage, www.artshum.org, in early April. Info: 206.842.7901.

Eagle Harbor Book Co. Limerick Contest. The winners of the Eagle Harbor Book Company Limerick Contest will be announced at the store sometime in April. Each poem mentions a Bainbridge Island location. Info: EHBC, www.eagleharborbooks.com or 206.842.5332.

BPA Gallery Poetry Exhibit: Poetry on Bainbridge: How It Began. The Bainbridge Performing Arts lobby walls are again turned over to local poets for artistically exhibited poems. This year’s featured poets are all legendary and long-time Bainbridge poetry teachers and mentors, including Bob McAllister, Ralph Cheadle, Everett Thompson, Nancy Rekow, Janet West, and Margi Berger. The BPA Gallery Poetry Exhibit runs through the month of April, and can be viewed Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., plus one hour prior to BPA performances. Info: 206.842.8569.

Poetry Is! Series on BITV. Poetry Is! Bainbridge Island Poets in Performance. Produced by Barbara Morrison with funding from the City of Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Fund. Five programs air on BITV and BKAT (Channels 12 & 22) throughout April. Featured poets: John Willson, John David, Kent Chadwick, Mary Victoria Dombrowski, Janet Norman Knox, Van Calvez, Tamara K. Sellman, Marian MacDonald, Neil Baker, and Beverley West. Information: 206.842.8728; mimidombrowski@yahoo.com.

April 6: The 24th (or 25th – no one’s sure) Annual San Carlos Poetry Reading. 1 – 4 p.m. San Carlos Restaurant, 279 Madison Ave. N., Bainbridge Island. Emceed by the incomparable Bob McAllister. Poets wishing to read can sign up in advance by calling the Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council at 206.842.7901 or at the door. The community is welcome at this free, rousing celebration of our local bards. The event is a fundraiser for Exhibition, BIAHC’s journal of visual and literary arts. The spring 2008 issue of Exhibition will be launched at the reading.

April 8: BPA Poetry Slam. 7:30 p.m. Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Ave. N. $5 suggested donation. Business License Changes – In an effort to ensure that all Island businesses have current business licenses, the City is strengthening its efforts to bring companies with lapsed licenses into compliance. City code requires all businesses that are located on or solicit business on Bainbridge Island to acquire a business license and renew it annually. The licensing process triggers a review to ensure that new and renewing businesses are in compliance with City regulations like zoning and signage rules, as well as Health Department standards. The City also collects Business and Occupation (B & O) tax from licensed businesses under state law. Initial license fees are $25 for small businesses (those receiving less than $18,000 in annual income) or $50 for regular businesses registering before business commences; the fees double for companies filing after beginning business activity.

“The City is committed to working with businesses to keep them in compliance with our regulations,” said Code Enforcement Officer Meghan McKnight. Close to 80% of the 2,800 businesses licensed by the City renewed through the regular process this spring, and multiple reminders have been sent by the Finance Department to those that have been operating without a license or that have not renewed.

Sixteen companies that have not responded to renewal efforts for two years have now been referred to Code Enforcement. They will be notified via certified mail sent Monday that failure to bring their license current within two weeks will carry a penalty of $500 per day in accordance with BIMC 5.04.030. Failure to bring B & O taxes current within three weeks will carry an additional penalty of $1,000 or jail time, in accordance with BIMC 5.06.030 and .040.

According to Elray Konkel, Director of Finance and Administrative Services, updates to the City’s accounting system this year have given staff greater ability to cross-check business license records with other databases, including the state’s monthly reports of sales tax receipts, allowing more accurate identification of out-of-compliance businesses. “Extra efforts by Finance Department staff to bring all businesses up to date this spring should assist with improved compliance and fewer violations in the future,” he said.

“This is really just a matter of fairness and good business practices,” said Acting City Administrator Matt Haney. “We hope this action will encourage all Island businesses to respect the process and keep their licenses current.”

More information and application forms are available on the City’s website at www.ci.bainbridge-isl.wa.us.

Twenty-First Century Jewelry
Mary Randlett: Northwest Landscapes
Mark Horiuchi: Color in Motion
Artist’s Gallery Talk: Mary Randlett, Saturday, April 5, 2 p.m.
Curator’s Gallery Talk: Mary Hu, Saturday, April 12, 2 p.m.

BAC’s guest curator for Twenty-First Century Jewelry, Mary Hu has brought together brilliant contemporary art jewelry by former students, all distinguished by “good design, good craftsmanship, and individuality of style.” BAC will also have a few examples of work by Mary Lee Hu, whose Choker #70 has recently been added to the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art [gorgeous image available!].

Mary Lee Hu will speak in the Gallery on Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m.. She’ll use the work in the exhibition to talk about new directions in contemporary jewelry.

Artists include Flora Book, Jana Brevick, Phil Carrizzi, Mary Lee Hu, Jan Mandel, Frederick Miller, Gina Pankowski, Maria Phillips, Vina Rust, and Amy Tavern.

Work by Flora Book, Mary Lee Hu, and Jana Brevick is exhibited courtesy of Facèré Jewelry Art Gallery in Seattle.

Photographer Mary Randlett wrote to a friend, "I step into that great mysterious beauty and behold a world of total magic that unfolds before me. Nothing else exists; nothing else matters. I'm at one with the world." Her black-and-white photographs of the form, light, and water of the Washington landscape make us, too, at one with the world. Mary Randlett’s work is in the permanent collections of over thirty prominent museums, and is currently on exhibit at the Tacoma Art Museum.

One of Washington’s most distinguished photographers, Mary Randlett will speak about her work in an informal conversation in the Gallery, Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m.

We first saw Mark Horiuchi’s paintings in our splendid exhibition, Intersections: Contemporary Work by Japanese-American Artists, when we chose one of Mark’s paintings for one of our exhibition prints. Mark weaves layer upon layer of paint, creating art that seems to stay in motion even after it’s dry and on the wall. We’ll also have new ceramic work by this resourceful artist.
