Decades: A Retrospective
From the 1970's to the Present, Lesley Kabelac's artistic memoir is a trip through time in a variety of medium. Beginning with her first watercolors in the 1970's an moving to the prints and paintings of the present, her new show is as full as her life story, told in the way only Lesley can. The past four decades have been rich and diverse.
Lesley has always been an artist at heart. From her early childhood doodles and designs she moved on to the art of movement, first as a skater with Ice Capade's where she met and married, to teaching ballet as a young mother of three. But she was always drawn back to her first love. And in the seventies when she went back to college to study nursing she found her passion in art class. Needless to say, she is a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Artist, but not a nurse!
It was at Olympic College, that she started growing the person we all know and love. And it was there that she met the life long friends that would go on to form Collective Visions Gallery. As a co-founding member, she has given glimpses over the years into her work, piece by piece as a painter and printmaker. But this show is different. Her current show is a timeline of her life and love. Her story, told through her art.
From her earliest watercolors, vibrant and innocent in the 1970's, to dark paintings during life's struggles, and prints created with intricate detail as her children grew and she had more time to work, she walks you thru her life. The first chapters in her current show are the story of a young wife and mother, then a full-time working artist. It is colorful and warm, at times dark and gloomy, but always insightful. With almost half a century of vision and life's blood poured out on canvas and paper you get to know the real Lesley. At 75 she is a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. But most important, she is an artist. Art is her story and the story of life around her.
As you walk thru her show, be encouraged to remember your life over the years. How does "Decades" relate to your life? Was your life full of color, did it have lots of shadows, were there more highs, or lows? How did you capture your life? Lesley did it with brushes, pastels and ink. But for her family and friends it is framed forever in our hearts.
