The KITSAP Story
in an Oyster Shell:

5000 BC - The Suquamish begin to settle on the Kitsap Peninsula.

1792 - Captain George Vancouver, first Englishman to visit this area, named Puget's Sound, Hood's Canal, Port Orchard, Mount Rainier, Vashon Island and other places.

1852 - First non-native inhabitants on the "Great Peninsula" built a mill at what is now Kingston.

1854 - Port Gamble and its mill begun. Longest operating sawmill of five original mills, it was in operation until 1996. The town is a National Historic Site.

1857 - Slaughter County established from parts of King and Jefferson Counties. Named after Lieutenant Slaughter. Six months later, the people changed the name to Kitsap County.

1866 - June 7th, Chief Seattle died. Though he was born, lived, died and was buried on the Kitsap Peninsula, he is best known for lending his name to what was later to become Washington’s largest city.

1891 - Puget Sound Naval Station established in Bremerton.

NATIVE INHABITANTS
For thousands of years before European exploration charted the waters of Puget Sound, several large communities of native people inhabited this area.

Tribe names like Suquamish, S'Klallam, Chemakum, Skokomish and Toanhooch were considered wealthy due to the abundance of food and other resources that coastal waters and forests provided.

On the shores of Agate Pass near Port Madison Bay is a small site called Old Man House Park. If you want to trace the history of Kitsap Peninsula, this is an excellent place to begin your journey. continue reading

EARLY SETTLEMENT
The most famous and well documented European expedition into Puget Sound waters occurred in 1792, when English Captain George Vancouver sailed his ship Discovery into Puget Sound.

Vancouver charted the waters and is responsible for naming many of the region's landmarks, including Puget Sound, Hood Canal, Mt. Baker, Port Orchard, Port Townsend, Dungeness Bay, Discovery Bay and Sinclair Inlet. continue reading

MOSQUITO FLEET
With dense forests and few roads through them, water remained the most efficient method of transportation around the Peninsula for many years. One of the most famous ferry services was called the Mosquito Fleet.

Like the name implies, this fleet of small steam vessels traveled the Puget Sound waterways, proving links between Peninsula communities and the Seattle-Tacoma corridor through the late 19th and early 20 centuries. continue reading

MILITARY INFLUENCE
The Army Corp of Engineers visited Puget Sound in 1867 and recognized the strategic significance of the region (as recommended by Lt. Charles Wilkes in 1841). Ten years later, Lt. Ambrose Barkely Wyckoff -- "Father of the Puget Sound Naval Yard" -- concurred with their opinion and asked Congress for funding, citing that the area was much closer to Japan and China than the base in San Francisco.

Still, the process was delayed until Washington's statehood in 1889 when Senator John B. Allen convinced the Navy to take another look at the area. continue reading
